About Me

I'm Michael,

My career, first as a photojournalist, then as an advertising and golf landscape photographer has been wonderfully enriching; affording me countless opportunities to capture images of interesting people, beautiful places and fascinating things. Some of the publications I have worked for include, but aren't limited to, are: The National Geographic Society, The New York Times, Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, Links Magazine, Time Magazine, and Fortune Magazine. My work has been chosen as room decor for eight Marriott luxury hotels.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Inspiration

My inspiration comes from the beauty of nature and the Hudson River School of Landscape painting. I found the landscape architecture of golf courses very satisfying to photograph, while helping my clients promote their business and attract golfers from the around the world. As someone who doesn't play the game of golf, I see the expanses of green fairways as meadows and the sky as an ever-changing backdrop. I often wonder if golf course designers employ the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui in their plans.

Techniques

Starting early in the morning, I work until the sun has gotten too high and bright. Then, in the late afternoon, I come back, often working right up to the last light of the day.  To produce images of what I see, I spend time scouting and use tools that are as ancient as a compass and clinometer and modern digital photographic equipment (including drones). In my digital darkroom, my work at the computer, with its advanced photo editing software, allows me to create my personal color palette, contrast, and the ability to remove blemishes. Modern technology helps me produce uniquely personal images.

Career Highlights

I began my career in photography at the age of 18, working for a newspaper. As my skills progressed I was offered work at larger newspapers, then at national magazines. Working as a photojournalist took me to places, and to meetings with wonderful people that money could not buy.  At some point along the way I was asked to photograph a new golf course and found it immensely satisfying. That was more than 25 years, and many, many golf courses ago.
